Starting a series on Public Speaking is my way of addressing budding public speakers and setting them on the right part on how best to get an audience engaged. In this series, we will be tackling the rudiments and the more tactical sides of public speaking.
Public speaking can be an incredibly rewarding experience. It allows you to share your ideas and knowledge with others, connect with like-minded individuals, and build your personal brand. However, getting started as a public speaker can be daunting, especially if you've never done it before. In this blog, we'll explore some tips and tricks for getting started as a public speaker.
Define your message and audience.
The first step in becoming a public speaker is to define your message and audience. What do you want to share with the world, and who do you want to share it with? Think about your passions, expertise, and experience. Once you have a clear idea of what you want to talk about and who you want to talk to, you'll be able to create a focused and impactful message.
Start small.
It's important to start small when you're getting started as a public speaker. Don't try to give a keynote speech at a large conference right away. Instead, look for local events or small meetups where you can practice your speaking skills. This will allow you to gain confidence and experience in front of an audience without feeling overwhelmed.
Practice, practice, practice.
The key to becoming a great public speaker is practice. Practice your speech in front of a mirror or record yourself so you can see how you come across. You can also practice in front of friends or family members who can give you constructive feedback. The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you'll feel when it's time to speak in front of a live audience.
Network and build relationships.
Networking is an important part of building a career as a public speaker. Attend events and conferences in your industry and make connections with other speakers and event organizers. This will help you build relationships that can lead to future speaking opportunities.
Create a website and social media presence.
In today's digital age, having a website and social media presence is essential for any public speaker. Create a website where you can showcase your speaking experience, topics, and testimonials. Use social media platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram, TikTok to share your speaking engagements and connect with your audience.
Be authentic and passionate.
The most successful public speakers are authentic and passionate about their message. Speak from the heart and let your passion shine through. This will help you connect with your audience and make a lasting impression.
Learn from others.
Finally, don't be afraid to learn from other public speakers. Attend their talks and take notes on what they do well and what you can improve on. You can also watch videos of great public speakers on platforms like TED Talks and Toastmasters.
Getting started as a public speaker takes time and practice, but you have to commit to it. If you want to up-skill, the process is also same.
The world is your stage, pick up your voice and keep on speaking!
